When winter temperatures drop below freezing, many homeowners worry about frozen pipes . But what often gets overlooked is how frozen or burst pipes can cause major electrical hazards.Water and electricity never mix - and when they do , the results can be very dangerous or deadly.
By taking a few preventative measures , you can protect both your plumbing and your electrical system during the coldest month of the year.
1. Keep Pipes Insulated And Heated
Frozen pipes are one of the biggest risks to your electricity safety in winter.
-Insulate pipes in unheated spaces like basements , crawl spaces , and garages
-Use safe, UL-listed pipe heating cables when necessary
- Never use makeshift heating sources ( like space heaters pointed directly at pipes)
2. Protect Electrical Outlets Near Plumbing
Pipes often run along walls where outlets are installed . If a pipe bursts, outlets can become wet.
- Install GFCI outlets in areas where water is present (bathrooms, kitchens , laundry rooms , basements)
-Seal gaps around outlets on exterior walls to prevent cold air and condensation
3. Keep Your Basement And Crawl Space Dry
These areas are most likely to flood if a pipe bursts.
-Use a sump pump with a battery backup
-Install wall sensors that can alert you before flooding reaches electrical wiring
-Never leave extension cords running along the floor
4.Check Your Main Electrical Panel location
Many panels are located in basements. The same area where pipes are vulnerable.
- Ensure your panel is raised off the ground
-If you notice any water near your electrical system DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING . SHUT OFF POWER AT THE MAIN BREAKER ( IF SAFE TO DO SO) AND CALL A LICENSED TECHNICIAN.
5. Have An Emergency Plan
If a frozen pipe burst s near wiring , outlets, or you're electrical panel :
- Shut off water immediately at the main valve
-Turn off electricity to the affected area ( if safe)
-Call a plumber and an electrician to assess damage before turning anything back on.
