Electrical overloads happen when more power is demanded from a circuit than it was designed to handle. While this sounds simple, the consequences can be serious. Overloaded wiring heats up inside walls, breakers trip, insulation melts, and in severe cases, fires can start. Understanding what causes overloads helps homeowners make smarter decisions about electrical use.

Most overloads occur in older homes with limited circuits. A single circuit may power an entire bedroom, hallway, or kitchen. When too many devices operate at once—such as a microwave, toaster, and blender—the circuit gets overwhelmed. Breakers trip because they’re protecting the wiring from excessive heat.
