🔌⚠️ GFCI vs. AFCI: What’s the Difference & Do You Need Them?
Electricity is powerful — and when it’s not protected properly, it can be dangerous. Two of the most important safety devices in your home are GFCI and AFCI. But what do they do, and how do you know if you need them?
GFCI = Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter
It protects people from electric shock by shutting off power the moment it detects an imbalance in current — like when water gets into an outlet.
AFCI = Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter
It detects dangerous electrical arcs (sparks caused by loose connections or damaged wires) and shuts off power to prevent fires.
Most homes built or remodeled after 2014 must have both AFCI and GFCI protection in specific locations. Older homes should upgrade to meet safety standards — even if not yet required by law.
A licensed electrician can check your panel, outlets, and wiring — and recommend the right protection based on your home's layout and age.
If you're not sure whether your home has the right protection, schedule an inspection. A simple upgrade can prevent life-threatening accidents.
