Heading out for a much-needed summer getaway? Before you lock the door and hit the road, make sure your home’s electrical system is ready too. A few quick steps can help prevent hazards, save energy, and give you peace of mind while you're away.

✅ 1. Unplug Unnecessary Devices

Even when turned off, many appliances still draw power — called phantom energy. Unplugging can reduce fire risk and lower your electric bill.

Unplug:

• TVs and sound systems
• Toasters, blenders, and coffee makers
• Desktop computers and monitors
• Chargers and lamps

Tip: Use power strips to make unplugging easier — just flip one switch.

✅ 2. Set Timers for Lights

Leaving lights on 24/7 is a waste of energy and makes it obvious no one’s home. Instead, use programmable timers or smart plugs to create a natural lighting pattern.

This helps deter burglars and keeps your home safer while you’re away.

✅ 3. Adjust Your Thermostat

If you don’t have pets or plants that need constant cooling, raise your thermostat to around 78–85°F to conserve energy.

Smart thermostats can even be monitored or adjusted from your phone!

✅ 4. Check Your Outdoor Lighting & Cameras

Make sure any outdoor lights, motion sensors, or security cameras are working properly before you leave.

• Replace dead bulbs
• Test motion lights
• Ensure cameras are recording or alerting your phone as expected

✅ 5. Inspect Your Electrical Panel

Open your breaker panel and check for any obvious issues:

• Tripped breakers
• Signs of burning or overheating
• Loose labeling — make sure each breaker is clearly marked

✅ 6. Consider Surge Protection

A power surge during a storm can damage TVs, fridges, routers, and other valuable electronics.
