A circuit breaker shuts off (or “trips”) to prevent overheating, electrical fires, or damage to your appliances. It’s doing its job. But why it’s tripping matters.
Common reasons include:
- Overloaded Circuit: Too many devices plugged in and drawing power.
- Short Circuit: A hot wire touches a neutral or ground wire, causing excess current flow.
- Ground Fault: Similar to a short, but involves wiring touching something it shouldn’t (often around water).
- Faulty Appliance: A damaged or malfunctioning appliance can cause repeated trips.
- Old or Worn-Out Breaker: Sometimes, the breaker itself is the problem.
What to Do When It Trips
- Unplug Devices on That Circuit
Lamps, toasters, vacuums—whatever was in use when it tripped.
- Locate Your Electrical Panel
Usually found in basements, garages, or utility rooms.
- Look for the Tripped Breaker
It’ll be in the middle (not fully ON or OFF). Flip it to OFF, then back ON.
- Plug Devices Back in One at a Time
If it trips again after a specific item is plugged in, that item may be the problem.
When to Call a Pro
Call a licensed electrician if:
- The same breaker keeps tripping repeatedly
- You hear buzzing from the panel
- You smell something burning
- Lights flicker even after resetting
- You have an older panel (Zinsco, Federal Pacific, etc.)
You could be dealing with a short, outdated wiring, or even a fire hazard.
