The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has created an interactive online map showing projects funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Passed on Nov. 15, 2021, the $1.2 trillion federal investment measure includes historic new spending for infrastructure projects across the nation, from roads and bridges to airports and public transit. Funding is allocated for spending over the next five years.
ASCE’s online map was created in collaboration with the economic development nonprofit Accelerator for America. Users can click on the map’s project pins to read project details, view videos from elected officials or see statistics from ASCE’s Infrastructure Report Card. Projects can be filtered by categories, including bridges, roads, stormwater, water, transit, rail and more.
One project on the map located in New York City is called “Safer Options for New York City’s Bikers and Walkers.” Details explain the city received a $7.25 million grant from the infrastructure bill aimed to reduce crashes and injuries by installing bike lanes and increasing transportation options to reduce vehicle miles traveled.
A project pin in Florida, “Orlando Airport’s Terminal C adds Capacity,” describes how $50 million of IIJA funding will go toward expanding Terminal C at the Orlando International Airport to better prepare the area for growth. Funding is also allocated to expand the commuter and inter-regional rail in the Orlando area.
While the map is not exhaustive, it helps users visualize the impact of this spending across the country, and may help electrical contractors identify opportunities for work. This interactive map tool is one of many resources available for tracking IIJA funding. Other resources include:
Despite some economic uncertainty moving into 2023, the White House maintains IIJA infrastructure spending will continue.
“The reality is that we're just at the beginning,” said Mitch Landrieu, senior advisor to the President responsible for coordinating the bipartisan infrastructure law. “Between now and the end of the year, we're going to kick off even more major projects.”
