Winter storms and freezing temperatures can lead to sudden power outages that last for hours—or even days. Knowing what to do when the power goes out can protect your home, your family, and your electrical system from damage. Here’s a quick guide to staying safe and prepared.
1. Unplug Sensitive Electronics
When the power cuts off, unplug computers, TVs, and other electronics to prevent damage from sudden surges when the power returns. Once electricity is restored and stable, you can safely plug everything back in.
2. Use Flashlights, Not Candles
It’s tempting to light candles during an outage, but they’re a major fire hazard—especially during winter when homes are closed up tight. Keep flashlights or battery-powered lanterns in easy-to-reach places instead.
3. Keep Generators Outdoors
Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near open windows. Carbon monoxide buildup can be deadly. Place your generator outside, at least 20 feet from your home, and have a licensed electrician install a safe transfer switch.
4. Avoid Opening Refrigerators and Freezers
Keeping the doors closed will help food stay cold for several hours. A full freezer can keep food frozen for about 48 hours, while a half-full one lasts around 24.
5. Stay Warm Safely
If you’re using space heaters once power is restored, make sure they’re plugged directly into wall outlets—not extension cords—and keep them at least three feet away from anything flammable.
